Atlanta Public Schools estimates it will receive nearly $90 million as part of a recent federal pandemic stimulus package.

Superintendent Lisa Herring announced during Monday’s board meeting that the district expects its allocation to be about $89.6 million in federal funds. The money is part of the $2 billion that Georgia schools will receive from coronavirus relief approved late last year.

Herring said APS has not yet determined how it will spend the money but has begun having those conversations.

“We recognize the importance to be thoughtful about how as a system we would allocate those resources,” she told board members.

The dollars are intended to be flexible, so that districts can decide what they want to use them for.

The money is in addition to the nearly $23 million allotted to APS roughly six months ago as part of a previous federal relief program.

Districts have faced additional expenses during the pandemic, from buying more computers and hotspots for students to purchasing protective equipment. Georgia districts also saw a drop in their state funding this school year.

The district’s general fund budget this year is about $843 million.
