Mild temperatures are back, and just in time for the Celebration Bowl.

Don’t get too excited — it will still be chilly. But if you’re tailgating and heading to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, you might be pleasantly surprised by the change in temperatures.

The Jackson State Tigers and South Carolina State Bulldogs will face off at noon at the downtown Atlanta stadium. The Celebration Bowl is a postseason college football game between the champions of the MEAC and SWAC.

By the time the game starts, it will be 52 degrees but will feel like 48 due to the wind, Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Brad Nitz said. The afternoon high in the city will reach 54 degrees.

By the time fans are ready to leave the stadium, temperatures will still be in the low to mid-50s.

Morning temps will only dip into the mid to high 40s. If you’re tailgating, you may be comfortable with just a jacket, but be aware that not much sunshine is expected.

Though it will be a mostly cloudy day, only a slight chance of rain is in the forecast. Nitz said a stray sprinkle is possible in the afternoon, but most of the rain will move into North Georgia during the evening and continue into Sunday morning.

In addition to planning a warm enough outfit, you may also want to consider how you’re getting to the game. Atlanta police are warning motorists about expensive parking fees, limited parking and traffic.

“Use MARTA or a ride-share service to reduce traffic congestion and parking issues. This is especially recommended if you plan to drink alcohol,” police spokesperson Teralyn Griffin said in an email.

If you do decide to drive, do not leave any valuables in your vehicle, such as guns, purses, bags, jewelry or laptops. Officials also urge people not to leave their unoccupied vehicles running, and never leave the keys inside.

“By adhering to these guidelines and utilizing the enhanced public safety measures, you’ll help ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience for yourself and others in the city,” Griffin added.

If you plan to take MARTA and need a refresher on how to ride, check out the agency’s “How to Ride to Downtown Events” YouTube video.
