One of two children shot Wednesday morning in west Louisville while waiting on the school bus has died, according to reports.
Initial reports said three children were shot, but officials later confirmed only two victims.
One of the children who was wounded has been pronounced dead, according to the Louisville Courier Journal.
The shots were fired from a passing car, the Courier Journal reported. Several other children were standing at the bus stop at the time but were not injured.
Gunfire erupted at the bus stop about 6:30 a.m. near Dr. WJ Hodge and Chestnut Street, WDRB reported, citing the Louisville Metro Police Department.
The victims were students at Eastern High School, WDRB reported.
They were rushed to a nearby hospital, but the condition of the second victim was not immediately available.
No other details were provided, and no suspects have been named.
The LMPD Homicide Unit is investigating, the Courier Journal reported.
The shooting occurred in a neighborhood. It was unclear if the children were the intended target.
The school bus arrived shortly after the shooting, WDRB reported.
Police had the scene secured shortly after 8 a.m. A video provided by WDRB showed a tree-lined street with homes where authorities cordoned off a large section of the road with yellow crime scene tape.
“This is devastating for us at the loss of one of our students in circumstances like this,” said Jefferson County Public School spokeswoman Renee Murphy, according to the station. “All of our hearts are breaking right now. We are thinking of the family, and we will support the family as best we can throughout this process.”
