Two people, including a 16-year-old, were arrested Thursday in a shooting that killed a 59-year-old woman as she slept in her bed, Atlanta police said.

Eva M. Jones was struck multiple times last week when gunfire erupted inside the Pavilion Place Apartments in the 500 block of Cleveland Avenue in southwest Atlanta, AJC.com previously reported. She was rushed to the hospital but died of her injuries.

“She was in her bedroom, so we do believe she was sleeping,” said Lt. Pete Malecki, commander of the Atlanta Police Department’s homicide unit. Jones’ boyfriend was in another room and was not injured, investigators said.

“The gunfire took place from outside the apartment,” Malecki said, adding that detectives believed the home was targeted.

Mimi Hixson-Smith, Jones' niece, told Channel 2 Action News she believes the intended target was the boyfriend, although she wasn’t sure why someone would want to shoot him.

She said her aunt was shot between eight and 10 times.

Police believe the woman's apartment was targeted in the shooting, though investigators have not released a motive.
