The Roswell Police Department is warning citizens of a new email scam circulating locally. This phishing scam attempts to trick victims into believing they have an outstanding/automated traffic citation that needs to be paid. Anyone receiving this email should delete it immediately, and not click on any links or input any personal information.

Advice from Roswell Police recommends a simple search online, “Copy some of the text of the email into google and see what search results you get. For example, copying ‘This notice is to inform you that you have been cited with a traffic violation and must pay your citation within 72 hours. We have payment plans available if necessary.’ yields nine results from other police departments or media outlets across the country warning about the same scam over the last few years.”

The Roswell Police Department will never send a citation via email. Roswell’s automated speed cameras in school zones will issue citations via standard mail.
