In July, the Norcross City Council adopted a moratorium on residential demolitions while they investigated adding a deconstruction and recycling ordinance to the Unified Development Ordinance.

The moratorium stems from a concern for potential environmental dangers when tearing down homes, especially when demolition involves an older home. Additional concern exists for the waste created and how some materials might be recycled.

At their September council meeting, Norcross officials voted to extend the moratorium until at least Dec. 31 while the city conducts additional research on the issue. At a minimum the city is seeking more assistance from the Historic Preservation Commission and possibly the Sustainable Norcross Commission.
