DeKalb County has opted to add two more early voting days before the Nov. 2 elections.
The county’s board of elections unanimously voted to add two Sundays to the early voting schedule, doubling the number of weekend days residents can cast their ballots. The new dates are Oct. 17 and 24 from noon until 5 p.m.
There are dozens of municipal races taking place this election cycle in the county in addition to a countywide question about renewing an education tax. DeKalb residents can choose between eight early voting locations.
Advance voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays between Oct. 12 and Oct. 29. In addition to the two Sundays, voters can also cast ballots on two Saturdays, Oct. 16 and 23, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The election board discussed adding the extra days during a Monday special-called meeting, where board member Karli Swift added the item to the agenda as the meeting began. Most of the discussion surrounded which Sundays they could choose, given changes to early voting enacted by Georgia’s controversial new voting law that passed in early 2021.
The law kept Sunday early voting optional. The law also limits drop boxes and requires different forms of ID for absentee voting. County election offices were given the authority to decide whether to open voting locations on up to two Sundays each early voting period.
