Two Cobb County Superior Court programs were recently recognized for fostering “accountability.”

The Council of Accountability Court Judges, a state group, named Cobb’s Family Treatment Court and the Veterans Accountability and Treatment Court as “model courts.”

The honor means both pre-trial intervention programs follow the state’s accountability court standards. The programs are designed to treat underlying issues with offenders arrested mostly for non-violent crimes.

“I am proud of the hard work of the entire Veterans and Family Treatment Court teams,” Superior Court Chief Judge Robert Leonard said. “This award is a testament to their continuous dedication to excellence in all they do.”

The veterans court was established in 2014 to provide treatment to military veterans facing criminal charges, pairing them with an honorably discharged veteran. There have been more than 50 graduates.

Family Treatment Court began in 2006 and operates as part of Cobb’s Juvenile Court system. The program teams with the Department of Family and Children Services to help parents with substance-abuse problems who’ve lost custody of their children. More than 130 parents have graduated from the court.
