An upgrade of $263,216 was approved by the Austell City Council on Oct. 4 for the city’s public safety radios.
For the city’s fire and police departments, these replacement radios will be funded by the 2022 special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST).
Payments will be split in three portions of almost $87,739 to be paid by Oct. 29, 2022; Oct. 29, 2023 and Oct. 29, 2024.
Both city departments are on the same Public Safety Radio system as Cobb County and most of the cities within the county, according to Councilman Marlin Lamar and Fire Chief Brandon Merritt in an Oct. 4 memo to Mayor Ollie Clemons and the City Council.
Periodically, due to advancements in technology, the radios that are used must be replaced, Lamar and Merritt added.
“We have known that replacement radios would be coming this year, and funds were appropriated for the replacement in the 2022 SPLOST for radios throughout the county,” said Lamar and Merritt.
The radios are supplied by Motorola Technologies, and Motorola has agreed to a three-year lease purchase agreement to help cities make payments as SPLOST funds become available, according to Merritt and Lamar.
The radios should be in operation by the end of this year.
