Yard sale treasures fill Locust Grove home

An African-style drum for $10 caught Tonya Ferguson’s eye – and cash – at a yard sale. Now it’s capturing attention in her kitchen.

“I’ve had someone offer me $100 for it and I wouldn’t take anything for it. I love it,” she said.

Ferguson has stories about all the second-hand treasures and antiques that she brought in to decorate her and husband Keith’s Locust Grove home after they were married in March 2014.

“Everybody always asks me, ‘How do you find all this good stuff at yard sales?’ I just see something that to me is whimsical or unique looking,” she said. “I love anything that just looks odd.”

Favorite artwork: The home was purchased from the estate of Keith’s late grandfather, JB Ferguson. Keith remembers his grandfather’s dining room always having a print of two men fishing from a boat. When decorating the house, Keith wanted to incorporate the print in the guest bedroom. The Fergusons took the painting to a local hobby store to have it professionally framed. When removing the print from the old frame, to their surprise, a second numbered print was found behind the first. They framed both prints, which hang in what they call the “JB room.” “We wanted to keep true to his memory,” Tonya said.

Favorite outdoor feature: The backyard, where the trees were selected and planted by Keith’s late grandfather, JB Ferguson.

Decor tip: Your home is a reflection of you. Have fun with it, use items that you like and the end result will be what you enjoy, Tonya said.
