Kids are heading back to school soon — Aug. 8 for many. For parents, that means it's time to go shopping.

But many thrifty moms and dads are reluctant to spend a bundle on a new wardrobe each season, only to discard it because their kid outgrows it.

Luckily, metro Atlanta is full of options for cheap kids clothes.

This time of year, many churches and other organizations host seasonal consignment sales, which allow parents to sell the clothes their kids have outgrown and to buy new ones. There are also year-round consignment shops and some discount stores to try.

Keep in mind Georgia's sales tax holiday is July 30-31 for clothes and other school supplies, so this may be the best time to shop.

Here are some options for finding cheap kids clothing. These are through August.

Special events

All 4 Kids, an organization that holds seasonal sales in a variety of Cobb locations, begins its fall and winter sales this weekend.

The first event is July 28-30 at His Hands Church in Woodstock. Aug. 11-13, the West Cobb area sale will be held at the Cobb fairgrounds. The East Cobb event is Aug. 19-20 at Mount Paran North Church of God in Marietta; and the final event will be Aug. 25-27 at Roswell Town Center. Each sale features at least 400 consignors, who set their own prices and receive 70 percent of their sales.

Winder First United Methodist Church has a sale this weekend with items for kids, babies and moms filling 5,000 square feet, and Kennesaw First Baptist Church will hold its Lil' Blessings consignment sale Aug. 12-13.

The massive Kidsignments sale, which features more than 1,500 sellers and lasts a week at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds, is also coming up. The sale starts Tuesday, Aug. 16, with additional discounts the last two day on Aug. 19 and 20.

If you miss these special events, don't worry, because there are more on tap for September.

Sweet Repeats

Consigning isn't a new concept for metro Atlanta. Buckhead's Sweet Repeats has been in business for nearly three decades. The stock mostly stays in line with the seasons, and prices are based on the quality of the merchandise.

Moms can even make the bargain finds more personalized for their new owners with onsite monogramming.

There is also a consignment store in Dacula called Sweet Repeats, which also offers sweet deals.

A few more consignment stores

Rhubarb & Custard, on Roswell Road in Atlanta, is trying to sell off its summer stock to make way for fall merchandise. Right now, all the summer clothes are 50 percent off, so moms and dads can stock up for next year.

Once Upon a Child is a consignment store on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs. It pays cash for clothes and other baby and child gear, and sells it again. The prices vary but can be up to 70 percent of the cost of a new item.

Kid to Kid is a chain of consignment stores with locations throughout Atlanta. Metro locations include Buford, Snellville, Cumming, Duluth, Alpharetta, Dunwoody, Woodstock, Kennesaw and Douglasville.

And don't forget to try Goodwill for clothes or a local ReStore for cribs.

Value Village

Value Village sells both new and used clothing at prices well below typical retail costs. The stores have many eclectic items, like antique furniture and vintage clothing, as well as the typical play clothes for your babies and toddlers. They also have shoes, toys and books.

Value Village has three locations in Atlanta and nine more in the metropolitan area.

And if you are looking for the best deal, mark your calendar for the last Wednesday of the month, when clothes are half off.
