Insomnia Cookies’ Kennesaw location at 1133 Chastain Road is set to open later this year. It will join Atlanta-area spots in East Atlanta, Poncey Highlands and Midtown. The latter two locations are near the campuses of Emory University and Georgia Tech respectively. There’s also an Insomnia Cookies location in Statesboro, which delivers to Georgia Southern University and the surrounding area. The first Georgia location, however, opened in Athens, near the University of Georgia in 2013.

Insomnia Cookies’ proximity to college campuses isn’t surprising when you glimpse its beginnings.

The shop was founded by then-student Seth Berkowitz at a college dorm at the University of Pennsylvania in 2003, according to the website. Three years later, the company opened its first brick-and-mortar store in Syracuse, N.Y. For eight years, Insomnia Cookies also had food trucks — or cookie trucks, as they were known. However, the trucks ceased operations in 2016.

While cookies may be the name, the shop also sells brownies and ice cream, the latter of which can top a sweet treat or be sandwiched in between two warm cookies to make a “cookiewich.” These desserts can usually be delivered from most locations from 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily. However, the coronavirus pandemic seems to have led locations including those in metro Atlanta to limit delivery to midnight Sunday - Wednesday and 1 a.m. Thursday - Saturday.
