If you've been having trouble sleeping the last couple months, you're not alone. Amid the coronavirus outbreak, a study found that the majority of American adults have lost sleep.
The study, commissioned by Sleep Standards, found that nearly 77% of Americans in March lost sleep over the coronavirus pandemic. If your sleep problems persist or you’re just looking for a project, maybe it’s time to give your master bedroom a revamp.
Just like every week, we’ve dug through the Private Quarters archives to round up some of the eye-catching bedrooms we’ve featured throughout the years. Some of these master bedrooms seem to bring the outdoors in with plenty of natural light, and even a view of Atlanta’s skyline. Others are more focused on simplicity and coziness.
If you’re in need of some inspiration to bring a fresh look to your master bedroom, here are some things to keep in mind.
Keep costs in mind
Like other projects around the house, a master bedroom remodel is an investment.
"Remodel costs tend to run about $110 per square foot, but that is like talking about the average cost of a car," interior designer Susan L. Miner told HGTV. "It really depends on how many bells and whistles you add."
Experts say a master bedroom expansion, with a dual bathroom, can range from $10,000 to $30,000, according to HGTV.
Consider the whole space
It's worth noting that investing in this space will likely pay off in the long run. HGTV notes on its website that remodeling your master bedroom can often be one of the biggest appeals when selling your home.
“A great master suite really makes a potential buyer able to imagine living there. It makes them want to live their lives in that home,” Jane Klein, of Jane Klein Interiors, told HGTV. “I have never had a client that only remodeled a bedroom. The goal is to achieve a more livable master suite, with a beautiful bath, better closets, usually a television, new windows and sometimes a small home office area.”
Things like walk-in closets and large master bathrooms are among the top features potential buyers often look for. And, even if you’re not in the market to sell, a remodel like this will make your space more enjoyable.
Start small
Of course, there are plenty of small ways to spruce up your space that don’t include a complete overhaul. Like a fresh coat of paint or new window treatments. And, when it comes to a good night of sleep, it’s all about the bed. But it’s not just about comfort, it’s also the central part of a master bedroom’s design.
Earlier this year, Good Housekeeping said canopy beds are among the top design trends for 2020, adding that it can add a "regal" touch to your space.
“Canopy beds no longer need to be draped in heavy fabrics and chunky headboards,” interior designer Abbe Fenimore told the magazine. “Modern versions made with acrylic, metal, and sleek upholstered frames are making a comeback.”
