Q: My heart is broken! I ordered tomato plants from Burpee, but they say they cannot ship to Georgia because of our state regulations. Where can I buy heirloom tomatoes? — Patty Kelly, Dacula
A: Burpee can ship tomato plants to Georgia, but it chooses not to because its organic growing methods conflict with Georgia Department of Agriculture regulations. Georgia requires that imported vegetable transplants be treated with insecticide to combat whiteflies. The rule started in 2007 to protect Georgia's $189 million tomato/pepper/eggplant crop from viruses that whiteflies spread. But why are you going out of state to buy tomato transplants? There are many local sources of heirloom and improved tomato plants.
Q: Any suggestion for how to get rid of earthstar fungus? I have lots growing in my backyard. Do I need to be concerned about my dogs? — Karen Thomas, Social Circle
A: Earthstar fungus is an oddly shaped mushroom that appears when an underground fungus "blooms." You can't eliminate them. Simply dig out the fungus or the egg-shaped precursor and put it in your garbage. I doubt there is any danger to your dogs, but consult a vet if you're worried.
