Atlanta 1940s home features flowing floor plan, new kitchen

Kelly and Ben Wells were happy that the kitchen needed revamping when they purchased the home. The modern, open space will be included in the Junior League of Atlanta Tour of Kitchens on March 23-24.

The gray-blue couch in the informal living space is from Pottery Barn. The Wells refinished and re-stained the two-tiered coffee table from Crate & Barrel.

Kelly and Ben Wells were drawn to the 1942 Atlanta home partly because of its charm, including the built-ins in the formal dining space. The previous owners left the crystal chandelier.

Leather armchairs from Crate & Barrel add modern angles to the informal living space.

Minimalist shelving flanks either side of the Viking range and vent hood, which are among the major changes to the kitchen by CSI Kitchen & Bath Studio. The rift-cut oak shelving is by Jay Rambo Co.

The Maritime Blue finish on the island captures attention in the renovated kitchen. The transitional cabinets are by Schrock and the perimeter cabinets have a Dover finish. The Statuario Maximus Caesarstone countertops were fabricated and installed by Stone Design. The existing hardwood floors were refinished.

"Prior to the renovation, it was just a big blank canvas," said Kelly Wells about a large wall in the informal living space. The couple turned the wall into a built-in that serves as storage, a TV stand and a display space.

In the informal dining space, connected to the remodeled kitchen, chairs from Serena & Lily accompany a built-in bench the couple added to create a roomy seating area.

An hourglass-shaped side table from Anthropologie accompanies armchairs from Casabella in the formal living area. Hints of spring hues are found in the poms on the pillows and tulips.

In the formal living room, a trunk that accompanied Kelly Wells' grandmother when she emigrated from Germany rests in contrast beneath a modern, gently curving coffee table from Redefined Home Boutique.

In the renovated guest bathroom, the Wells created a classic look with honeycomb tile on the floor and subway tile in the shower. The vanity is from RH.

A vintage armchair passed down from Ben Wells' grandmother was recovered by the couple in a more modern fabric.

In one of the guest rooms, bedding from HomeGoods is accented by pillows received as wedding gifts. A painted ladder from Peridot brings modern farmhouse design elements into the room.

In the guest bathroom, a woven vase and oval mirror are both from Rejuvenation. The space was one of the first projects the Wells tackled in their Atlanta home, which has three bathrooms.

A small set of stairs still separates the main living space from the master suite, though the split floors in the kitchen, living and dining area were leveled out in the renovations to create one free-flowing space.

The couple incorporated into the decor reminders of places they have visited. The photograph above their bed, by Christine Flynn, is of a beach in Iceland, and the map of Paris above the desk is from Peridot.

The sleigh bed in one of the four bedrooms is another piece from Ben Wells' grandmother, as well as the footstool.

Fitting with the transitional interiors, linens on the master bed are from West Elm and decorative pillows are from Scott Antique Market.

The reading nook in the master bedroom was once the master closet, but the previous owners transformed the space when they converted a bedroom next door into a master bathroom and closet.

The home in Atlanta's Springlake neighborhood was built in 1942 and has about 2,300 square feet, four bedrooms and three bathrooms.

Kelly and Ben Wells bought their 1942 Atlanta home in 2016. Kelly is the mergers & acquisitions manager at Cox Communications and Ben is a vice president in investment banking for SunTrust Robinson Humphrey.
