A half-billion people use the Yahoo search engine every month, according to company officials. Here are their Top 10 searches for the year.

The folks who run the Yahoo search engine have been ranking their Top 10 searches for 12 years now. Basically, they rank the 10 people or news events that have been typed into their search box. No. 10 in 2012 was singer/actress "Jennifer Lopez."

No. 9 in 2012 was actress "Lindsay Lohan," mostly because of her troubled private life, not her acting career.

No. 7 was "Olympics." The 2012 Summer Games were in London.

No. 6 was "Whitney Houston," who died Feb. 11, hours before she was scheduled to perform at a pre-Grammy show.

No. 5 was "Kate Middleton," the Duchess of Cambridge, who got a lot of clicks before the news that she was pregnant.

No. 4 was model/actress "Kate Upton," mostly for the modeling part. She was on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition.

The top Yahoo search word for 2012 was "election." Yahoo officials said in the 12 years of ranking searches only two other news events got the top spot -- the BP oil spill in 2010, and Michael Jackson's death in 2009. Top Bing celebrity searches in 2012.
