“Mulan” opens in theaters nationwide March 27. It tells the story of Hua Mulan, a Chinese warrior who disguises herself as a man in order to fight in the Imperial Chinese Army in the place of her ailing father. The new release comes more than 20 years after Disney released an animated version of the Chinese legend. The new film, however, differs from the 1998 edition in more ways than just the lack of animation.
The Niki Caro-directed version stars Yifei Liu as Mulan and fans of the earlier take on the tale won’t see her burst into a rendition of “Reflection.” In this version, no songs are included. Also omitted is the dragon character of Mushu, voiced by Eddie Murphy.
This year’s “Mulan” is also the first for a Disney live-action remake in regards to the rating. It’s the first to get a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, which cited “sequences of violence.” So while the Halcyon Forsyth event is suitable for younger audiences, those who have yet to make it to teendom may need to view the film with a parent.
