Rain, rain, go away — or not. The constant downpours in and around the metro Atlanta area can be used to your benefit for an upcoming event in Dunwoody.

For $25, the Dunwoody Community Garden & Orchard (DCGO) is hosting an event later this month to instruct guests on how they can take advantage of the wet weather and harvest rain water.

At the DCGO’s greenhouse complex in Brook Run Park Saturday, March 28, guests will be supplied with all the materials necessary to create their own rain barrels to take home. Guests can sign up by calling 404-298-4080.

Rain barrels are a way to collect rain water and use it for things such as watering your plants, according to How Stuff Works. The process of evaporation releases many chemicals from the liquid, making it soft and ideal for flowers.

Using rain collected in barrels can also reduce demand for water from municipal water systems, which helps protect local ecology. Rain barrels can also have benefits in the summer time, depending on where you live. Supplementing water needs with the water from barrels can reduce residents’ utility bills.

The Dunwoody Community Garden was founded in August 2009 and provides hands-on gardening opportunities as well as educational and social events in partnership with local organizations. These events are focused on improving the Dunwoody community.
