Looking to do some light reading? Or perhaps by the pound? At a Lawrenceville store, booklovers can pack on pounds of literature to an at home library for cheap.
Books By The Pound, which first opened its doors in 2017, originally started as three-month trial. The store’s owners were exploring relatively uncharted territory: a massive (about half the size of a football field) store stuffed with thousands of titles to choose from, sold by the pound.
"I don't think there's anything at this scale or this inexpensive by the pound. We might be the first to do that, that I've seen, anyway," co-owner Cris Williams said when the store first opened.
More than two years later, the experiment is proving successful. The store is packed with hundreds of thousands of volumes.
In addition to books ranging from classics to new releases, the store also sells DVDs, CDs and vinyl.
Here’s how it works: The first 3 pounds you buy are $3.99 a pound; the next 5 pounds will cost $2.99 a pound; after that books are $1.99 a pound. So really, it behooves bookworms to keep shopping.
"It's like the book sale that never ends. This has been a wonderful experience so far, much more fun than I ever anticipated," Williams previously told the AJC.
According to the store’s Facebook page, the owners hope Books By The Pound makes reading more accessible to everyone. It’s also become a place to gather: The store has recently added plenty of places to sit and read, as well as meeting rooms.
And if that weren’t enough, shoppers can also receive store credit for trading in their own gently used items. Just pack up the items you’re ready to part with and Books By The Pound will review them while you shop, then text you when your trade is ready. You can apply the trade credit to anything sold in the store.
The store also has regular sales throughout the holiday season. You can stay up to date on Books By The Pound's Facebook page.
If you go: Books By The Pound is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday-Saturday. It is at 2100 Riverside Parkway in Lawrenceville.
