Zoo Atlanta’s Eleanor the warthog officially has company in the African Savanna habitat.
Nearly two months after three female piglets were born, they’ve begun to make appearances in their zoo space.
The piglets are now 7 weeks old and the new footage shows one of their first forays into the habitat. This is the first litter for Eleanor and Hamlet, a younger warthog who came from Texas’ Houston Zoo in October 2020 as a companion. The litter has not yet met Hamlet, but their time spent in the habitat is driven by Eleanor. According to a Zoo Atlanta press release, Eleanor “is an excellent first-time parent and is very protective of her offspring.” The piglets will meet Hamlet as a future milestone.
Although there is no guarantee that guests will see the unnamed piglets, it’s possible to see them as the weeks go on. During that time, the sightings should increase as the offspring adjust to their new environment.
The zoo also shared footage of the piglets on social media.
“We are thrilled to welcome warthog piglets to Eleanor and Hamlet and to our African Savanna,” Jennifer Mickelberg, Ph.D., Vice President of Collections and Conservation said in an April press release. “The African Savanna highlights the interconnectedness of all life. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate that connection than with new life.”
The three piglets join other new zoo arrivals. They include the newly announced lappet-faced vulture chick, twin golden lion tamarins, a crowned lemur infant and a tawny frogmouth chick.
