Kenya Moore posted an apology on social media today for wearing a Native-American headdress costume at a “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” party that aired during Sunday’s episode.
“I now realize that this was both disrespectful and insensitive and would never have done it if I had that knowledge and understanding beforehand,” Moore wrote. “I regret it. When you know better, you do better. I am genuinely sorry.”
She wore the headdress without explanation on the show while most of the ladies opted for “cat”-themed outfits. Drew Sidora and Porsha Williams questioned Moore’s costume choice after the fact. Nobody confronted Moore about her costume to her face that night.
“Kenya’s Native American costume is super problematic, but I ain’t trying to ruffle no feathers for this girls trip,” said Sidora, who was planning a girls trip to New Orleans soon after the Halloween party.
Williams, who is not a friend of Moore’s at all, added: “Kenya is a Native American warrior. I thought we weren’t doing that no more. Like, I knew that this girl was crazy, but add lame to the list, add whack to the list.”
In a Bravo aftershow, Williams called Moore’s costume “head-to-toe cultural appropriation.”
Bravo, too, released its own statement about allowing Moore to wear that outift: “We had hoped it would provide a teachable moment, however in retrospect it is clear that the network did not address this properly given the gravity of the situation. We apologize to both the Native American community and our audience as a whole.”
