The modern, angled design continues outside with an impressive waterfall that cascades from the top of the outdoor kitchen area.

The partially covered back patio serves as an extension of the kitchen when weather is nice. Kirk added the retaining wall with built-in concrete steps, and the patio gives Karen ample space for container gardening.

Scott Antique Market is a go-to for the homeowners, especially after they found a dog-shaped grill there. Dubbed"Big Bubba Blue," the grill is part artwork and part appliance. It's made out of a Kenworth truck, Derrick said.

When the homeowners expanded their 1918 cottage to add a family room off the kitchen, they included a series of French doors that open onto the enclosed courtyard patio. Natural light fills the family room, and the doors promote easy indoor-outdoor flow.

"We wanted to extend and have more outdoor space for grilling and dining," said homeowner Sarah Traverso. When she and her husband, Angel Traverso, bought their DeKalb County home last year they worked with landscaper Brian Estes, who put in pavers for their back patio. The backyard may be only 20 feet by 20 feet, but it has a patio, plants and a grill. Ryan Gravel appreciates that the small outdoor space doesn't require time-consuming maintenance but still gives him a spot for garden therapy.

The shingled home has a wide front porch with French doors that invite indoor-outdoor entertaining.

A large backyard is perfect for Seth and Allie Ott's three children and dog to play. The covered porch, with its comfortable seating area and craftsman style pillars, gives Allie and Seth a great spot to watch the kids, sit for a cup of coffee or gather to grill out as a family.
