The best fried chicken recipe in Georgia, according to Taste of Home magazine, is from an Atlanta restaurant that doesn’t even serve chicken. Well, not technically.

Cafe Sunflower in Buckhead is a vegan restaurant, so it’s “chicken” doesn’t come from a bird.

Instead, it serves seitan, a “plant-based meat substitute made from wheat gluten that mimics the flavor and texture of chicken,” according to Food Network.

That didn’t stop the magazine from naming its chicken and waffles dish as the best in Georgia.

“Vegans and vegetarians rejoice: You can chow down on America’s favorite finger-licking meal, too! At this award-winning restaurant, treat yourself to a waffle topped with fried chicken seitan and of course, a dollop of vegan whipped cream,” it wrote.

Cafe Sunflower’s original location, in Sandy Springs, closed in 2020 after 25 years, but its Buckhead restaurant remains open at 2140 Peachtree Road Suite 290, Atlanta 30309.

“Our award-winning kitchen has taken the time to master the art of plant-based cooking,” the cafe states on its website. “So whether you’ve made a lifelong commitment to veganism, or you’re just going meatless for one meal, we’ve got you covered.”
