After 40 years of being a staple on ice cream trucks and sold in grocery stores nationwide, the Choco Taco has hit the end of the line.

A representative for ice cream giant Klondike said it was discontinuing the Choco Taco due to a growing demand for different products over the past two years according to PEOPLE.

As social media users sharing their sadness over the taco shaped treat, Alex Ohanian, entrepreneur and husband to Serena Williams, took to Twitter with a last ditch effort to save the taco. Ohanian is a fan of the ice cream and wants to keep the childhood tradition alive by buying the rights.

Choco Taco was created in 1983 by Alan Drazen who was a mobile vendor – an ice cream truck driver. He worked for ice cream company Jack & Jill in the 70s and had a lot of time on his hands during the fall, which is slow for ice cream season.

He was 32 at the time and started brainstorming ways to create a different type of ice cream eating experience – while expanding the Jack & Jill brand. At the time, according to Drazen, Mexican food was on the rise.

“Mexican food was the fastest-growing segment of the food industry, and the taco was the most recognizable shape,” Drazen told Eater.

He came up with ice cream ideas, flavors and ultimately landed on one that was fun – luckily his boss let him run with the idea – thus the Choco Taco was invented.

“When you eat a sugar cone, you generally eat the nuts, chocolate, and ice cream on the top, and then when you get to the cone, you’re only eating ice cream and cone,” Drazen said.
