“If you see something, say something,” an Instacart shopper advises in a TikTok video, recounting how following her gut instinct may have saved her customer’s life.
In an emotional video she posted Feb. 1, Jessica Higgs, a mom from Georgia, said she received an order from a woman ordering food for her elderly father who was unable to shop for himself, Today reported.
“I’m going the extra mile for this customer like I always do, but for whatever reason, this time I was going even further,” she explained.
When Higgs went to drop the order off on the porch, per the daughter’s request, something was telling her ‘No, you gotta help this man out,’” Higgs said.
When the man came out, according to Higgs, she offered to help him bring the groceries inside his home — despite Instacart’s protocol.
“You’re not supposed to go inside someone’s house, but I used my judgment and I brought the groceries inside and I put them down wherever he wanted me to put them, and you’re not supposed to but I did,” Higgs continued.
“You’re just supposed to take a picture and leave. And I could not just leave,” she said tearing up. “I go to message the lady because I was very concerned for her dad that he just looked sick and I didn’t know what to do. So I messaged her and I said, ‘If I say that the order is complete, I won’t be able to message you and I want to tell you this.’”
“There’s a propane tank in there and I was in there maybe five feet and I got dizzy. And I said there’s got to be a leak. He might not be doing good because of this leak,” she recalled.
According to Higgs, the daughter replied that she would have her son go check on her father and then proceeded to change her tip on the order from $14 to $100, “which I’m grateful for but I’m crying because of what she commented this morning.”
Higgs then shared the comment on her TikTok video, which read, “Thank you so much, once my son went to check on my dad it turned out it definitely was leaking, you definitely saved my dad and my younger son’s life!!!”
As of Monday morning, the video has received more than 15.7 million views and nearly 200,000 comments, including some from celebrities.
