Taylor Swift has released her newest single, “Carolina,” to accompany the upcoming film, “Where the Crawdads Sing,” which focuses around a haunting crime committed in a small Southern town. The song was teased three months ago in the trailer for the Daisy Edgar Jones-led picture.

The song is reminiscent of the plot of the film, with soft vocals and a folksy melody. Written by Swift and her frequent songwriting partner, Aaron Dessner, the song goes through set pieces of the film.

Based on the 2018 novel by Delia Owens, which became one of the best-selling novels of all time, the film is set in the marshes of North Carolina, and follows an abandoned young woman who has to learn to fend for herself. When a tragedy befalls her first love, the story takes a dark turn when she is accused of his murder.

Swift first posted a snippet of her song in March, along with the film’s trailer.

“Where The Crawdads Sing is a book I got absolutely lost in when I read it years ago,” Swift said in the post’s caption. “I wanted to create something haunting and ethereal to match this mesmerizing story.”

“Carolina” is Swift’s first release since “This Love (Taylor’s Version),” which was a rereleased version of her 2014 ballad that she recorded to accompany the Amazon Prime original series, “The Summer I turned Pretty.”

“Where the Crawdad Sings” is set to hit theaters July 15.
