Lady Gaga is reportedly in talks to play iconic DC villain Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix in the upcoming “Joker” sequel, which is set to be a musical.

Gaga’s Quinn ostensibly will be set in a different universe than her most recent portrayals by Margot Robbie in “Birds of Prey” and the 2021 film “Suicide Squad”, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

“Warner has yet to close a deal with the actor, with the two sides deep into it,” according to sources.

“Joker” director Todd Phillips, who produced Gaga’s Oscar-nominated film “A Star is Born”, posted what seems to be the script for the upcoming sequel last week, along with a photo of Phoenix reading it over. The working title, “Joker: Folie à deux”, is a reference to the phenomenon when an identical mental disorder affects two or more people.

While no plot details for the film have been released, Harley Quinn is known for her toxic, and abusive at times, relationship with the Joker who she met when she was his psychiatrist. In the comics, she falls madly in love with him and becomes his partner-in-crime; however, Phillips took many creative liberties with the DC universe in his last film.

“Joker” was an immense critical and commercial success, grossing over $1 billion at the box office when it came out, becoming the first R-rated film to do so. It earned 11 Academy Award nominations and won two, including Best Actor for Phoenix.

Gaga’s foray into acting has received acclaim from critics and fans alike, particularly her starring roles in the 2018 remake ofA Star is Born” and her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani in “House of Gucci”. Her ever-supporting fans have already shown their excitement for Gaga’s possible turn as Harley Quinn.
