The American Music Awards, hosted by Wayne Brady on Sunday, featured many talented artists and saw awards handed out to many fan favorites.

One of those winners was R&B singer — and five-time AMA winner — Chris Brown. The “No Guidance” singer wasn’t present for the awards, which may be just as well. The singer was booed by the audience after winning the Favorite Male R&B Artist award. Destiny’s Child member and actress Kelly Rowland accepted the award on his behalf and attempted to calm the audience.

“Excuse me... chill out,” Rowland said, holding up a finger towards the crowd, as she praised Brown for his contributions to the music industry.

Brown was set to perform in a Michael Jackson tribute celebrating the 40th anniversary of the “Thriller” album, but the performance was canceled at the last minute without any explanation.

Brown posted footage from his rehearsal of the Jackson tribute to his Instagram account.

“WOULDVE been the ama performance but they cancelled me for reasons unknown,” Brown said in the comments.

Brown has won 125 awards in his musical career and has starred in four feature films. But the performer has also come under fire — in particular after a 2009 domestic abuse incident with then girlfriend Rhianna.

Brown is set start his Under the Influence tour in February with the first leg starting in Europe.
