There’s some truth in the old saying “catching up on my beauty sleep” — at least where Jennifer Lopez is concerned. Lopez shared some of her beauty secretes with her 209 million followers on Instagram, and number one on her list was sleep.
With Halftime — a Netflix documentary highlighting the hardships, stress and anxiety Lopez has faced throughout her career — scheduled to premier June 14th, fans couldn’t help but wonder how the triple threat has aged so well.
“As I slept more and took care of myself, I realized it was about pro-living versus anti-aging,” she said on Instagram. “Sometimes I wake up and say, ‘Wow! I just lost 10 years off my face!’ That’s what a good night’s sleep can do for you, and it accumulates over time. So go get your sleep!”
J.Lo might be on to something. According to WebMD, skin produces new collagen while you sleep, which helps prevent sagging. Experts say individuals who get just five hours of sleep have nearly twice as many fine lines on the face compared to people who get seven hours of sleep.
Sleep is critical for the body to repair itself and recharge. A lack of sleep can reek havoc on your skin in particular, including:
- hanging eyelids
- swollen eyes
- darker under eye circles
- paler skin
- more wrinkles and fine lines
- droopy corners of the mouth
- increased skin aging
Creating a healthy nighttime routine along getting a great night’s rest can be hugely beneficial for your skin.
According to Forbes, the beauty industry in 2019 had an estimated $130 billion dollars in global sales from lotions, serums, scrubs and fillers. With the amount of cosmetic procedures and creams plastered on faces worldwide, it’s necessary to properly cleanse skin before going to bed.
Experts recommend using a moisturizer and sleeping on your back. The rumor of needing a “special pillow case” to enhance your nightly beauty is a myth according to Karin Olszewski, RN, of Samaritan Plastic, Reconstructive & Hand Surgery.
