Brittney Griner is set to return to the WNBA for the 2023 season. She’ll be playing for the Phoenix Mercury, the team she’s played with since first signing as a rookie in 2013.

Griner spent 10 months detained in Russia. Upon her release, her thoughts turned immediately to returning to the sport she loved.

“I also want to make one thing very clear,” Griner wrote in an Instagram post after her release. “I intend to play basketball for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury this season, and in doing so, I look forward to being able to say ‘thank you’ to those of you who advocated, wrote, and posted for me in person soon,” she said

Griner and her team were in agreement that they would reunite if and when Griner was ready to get back on the court. Now, ESPN has broken the news that Griner will indeed be wearing her Phoenix jersey when the season starts in May.

According to reports, the 32-year-old signed a one-year deal worth $165,1000 on Saturday. Although Griner is a free agent, she’ll be returning to the team that drafted her in 2013.

Fans are hopeful that Griner can continue her hot streak with the Mercury. In 2021, she helped lead them to the WNBA finals.

Griner is an Olympic gold medalist, three-time All-Star and a two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the year.
