Celebrate identity, freedom at Juneteenth Black History Parade

Celebrated on June 19, the day commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

Organizers have announced this year’s plans for the Black History Parade occurring in conjunction with Juneteenth Atlanta celebrations in Centennial Olympic Park.

The parade will begin at noon Saturday, June 19. The route, which begins at Jackson Street and includes Auburn Avenue, will pass the King Center and end at Centennial Olympic Park.

This year’s parade theme is True Identity=True Freedom — free the land. There’s no cost to attend.

“Would you like to make a life long and positive impact on our youth and overall communities? Then join us in bringing a parade that not only shows our youth their history it also allows them to participate,” the parade website says. “We want every child to know that from their first breath, they inherit everything achieved previous to their re-arrival. Spirit never dies... We invite everyone to participate in this offering.”

Organizations including the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Vets 4 Veterans, Simply United Together and Morris Brown College have come together to support this parade and the accompanying music festival.

The Black History Parade will join the Juneteenth Atlanta festival that begins Friday, June 18.

Among the nearly two dozen activities planned for the fest are African drums and dances, family reunions, bounce houses, face painting, food trucks and yoga, meditation and martial arts fields.

Since Juneteenth Atlanta is a free event, organizers have been accepting donations via CashApp to help it remain free of charge.
