Atlanta's federal penitentiary, among the original three authorized nationwide through the Three Prisons Act of 1891, remains one of the city's unique historical landmarks. The other two prisons established were USP Leavenworth (Kan.) and USP McNeil Island (Wash.). USP Atlanta remains in operation as a medium security location.
