Whether you’d like the grandkids to appreciate where their food is grown or you’re just a proponent of fresh air and cute animals, farm and farm-adjacent activities near Atlanta sure are fun.
Here are some farm-fresh activities, at least one for each age group:
Pick flowers at Red Oak Lavender Farm
11 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, 1-4 p.m. Sunday, free to enter the shop, souvenir cups $12 and up, Red Oak Lavender Farm, 2882 Red Oak Flats Rd., Dahlonega
There’s something to be said for visiting this 5-acre family farm after its signature lavender crop has already been harvested in June. There’s much less hubbub, and unlike during peak lavender season, parking is free.
The U-Pick flowers are still available, with some late-summer zinnias among the August offerings. The drive from Atlanta to Dahlonega has a pleasant “take me home, country roads” vibe.
Be sure to bring well-charged phones and cameras for selfies. And if you’re regretting the lack of lavender, rest assured that a bevy of lavender products are still available in the farm store.
Shaun the Sheep interactive exhibit
9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m., Thursday-Sunday August 23-27, 17.95 weekdays, $19.95 weekends ages 1 and up, Children’s Museum of Atlanta, 275 Centennial Olympic Park Dr., Atlanta
If it’s been a while since you’ve taken some time out with the littlest ones in the family, check this out: a special exhibit intended for those ages 3-9 that encourages children to solve problems while they have fun.
It features the appealing film and television characters Shaun the Sheep and crew from Mossy Bottom Farm. There’s also a special “tot spot” for the 3 and under crowd. The Barn offers a chance to work off some energy on wall climbing, balance boards and the like.
Don’t put it off — the exhibit closes on September 4. You must reserve a spot and purchase tickets online.
Bremen Farms farmer’s market and family fun day
11 a.m.-3 p.m., Sunday, August 27, free, Bremen Farms, 374 Morgan Rd., Buchanan
About an hour from Atlanta, you’ll discover the 660 acres of Bremen Farms.
On Sundays from May to mid-November, they offer good clean fun along with produce, eggs, flowers, honey and other pop-up market items for sale.
This particular Sunday will also feature live music from singer/songwriter Edd Saxon and bouncy houses, corn hole and other outdoor games for those who love to play. Older folks can enjoy sitting on the porch and ambling through the renovated 1925 barn onsite.
If you’re overdue for some special one-on-one time with a tea-loving teen or tween, this Sunday is also a Tea Blend Class at the farm, taught by Diana Smedler of Tranqilo teas. It costs $55 per person and participants concoct personalized blends to take home.
Reserve a spot and pay for the tea class here.
