It’s important to monitor your health at any age, but after 50, it can be especially imperative.
“If you want a future that’s disease-free and enjoyable, it’s vital to start taking steps to protect your health and longevity,” Roger Landry, preventive medicine physician and author of Live Long, Die Short, told Prevention.
Eat This, Not That outlined several signs your health may be in danger if you’re over 50. Here are a few of them.
Not checking your blood pressure recently
Even if you don’t believe you have an issue, it’s important to check your blood pressure to rule out high blood pressure, WebMD advised. Having elevated blood pressure can lead to eye problems, kidney issues, stroke and heart attack. Blood pressure under 120/80 means you can probably check it once yearly. If it’s higher, your doctor may check it more frequently. Speak to your doctor to find out what’s best for you.
Drinking too much
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism cited a study that found alcohol use has steadily grown in the last two decades among adults 60 and over. Drinking heavily can make common conditions among older adults worse. They include osteoporosis, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, liver issues and memory problems.
Not scheduling a colon screening
The Colorectal Cancer Alliance says every man and woman should be screened for colorectal cancer. Reader’s Digest’s The Healthy reported almost 90% of new cases happen in people over age 50. Typically, colon cancer begins as a small slow-progressing growth, which can turn into cancer if unchecked.
