The national nightmare is over — Taco Bell is bringing back its fan-favorite Mexican Pizza.

After months of speculation, the fast-food chain announced in a press release on Monday that the menu item will officially return on May 19, thanks to Doja Cat, “the voice of the Taco Bell people,” and a nearly 200,000-signature online petition titled “Save the Mexican Pizza.”

“From petitions to memorials, to merch, the Taco Bell cult has (rightfully) been all but silent about its menu hiatus,” Taco Bell said in their release.

Krish Jagirdar, an Indian American, started the petition after noticing how popular the menu item is in the South Asian community. The Mexican Pizza — made up of two crispy flour shells, layered with beans, pizza sauce, seasoned beef, tomatoes and a melted three-cheese blend — is an easy option for vegetarians when ordered without the seasoned beef.

“Like many Indian-Americans who grew up vegetarian, we had limited access to the ‘fun’ fast food, so Taco Bell became a bridge to belonging in American culture for many kids like me who grew up in immigrant households,” Jagirdar said, according to the release.

“That’s what made it especially devastating when the Mexican Pizza was pulled from menus in 2020, but fast forward two years later and I found myself on a conference call with the Taco Bell team as they shared news of the return of the Mexican Pizza, showing that listening to their fans is clearly embedded in their DNA.”

Doja Cat, a Taco Bell partner, was among the first to confirm the Mexican Pizza’s return during her Coachella performance on Sunday. “I brought back the Mexican Pizza by the way!” she shouted on stage.

“She literally dropped the mic with the HOT news of the Mexican Pizza’s return this May,” Taco Bell said.
