When you think about traveling with small children, you probably think about the travel itself — planning around sleep schedules, packing diaper bags and snacks — but what about the destination itself? How kid-friendly is it? Will your toddler actually have fun or just get dragged around from site to site?
This year, why not look for a destination that’s sure to be just the right combination of stimulating fun and relaxing down time. After all, you’re on vacation, so maybe the kid isn’t the only one who could benefit from a nap.
Family Destinations Guide recently put together a list of the best vacation destinations for families with toddlers and small kids. Here are our favorites:
Captiva Island, Florida
It’s easy to be captivated by the green waters of Captiva Island, Florida. While it has breathtaking views, it’s not just a place for beach bums and sun tans.
There’s plenty on the island to keep you and your children entertained. You can kayak, hike, swim with the dolphins and manatees, set sail, go deep-sea fishing and more.
Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
Don’t be fooled by Pigeon Forge’s small size. This little town is packed with plenty of things to do for the entire family.
“Test your putting skills with a game of mini-golf or race to the finish at one of our go-kart tracks. If you’re an outdoors enthusiast, go on an adventure in the Smoky Mountains or spend an afternoon strolling through one of our city parks.” says the town’s website.
Langhorne, Pennsylvania
Taking your little one to see Big Bird and friends might make you the coolest parent of the year. Langhorne, Pennsylvania, is home to Sesame Place, featuring rides, games, Sesame Street characters and more.
If you can drag your tot away from Elmo, you’ll discover plenty of family-friendly activities, including the Centertec gaming center and the BounceU giant bounce house.
Durham, New York
Durham is tucked away in the Catskill Mountains of New York, where outdoor fun is king. There are lots of kid-friendly hiking trails and several petting farms.
Older kids will love Zoom Flume Water Park and Blackthorn Resort, which both offer lots of fun activities.
Williams, Arizona
Williams is less than an hour from the Grand Canyon, making it the perfect pit stop on a family vacation out west.
While strolling down its six-block historic downtown, make reservations to check out Bearizona, a real-life wildlife drive-through experience featuring wolves and bears. There’s also a petting zoo with many farm animals.
