On the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust unveiled a large visible tribute to local survivors and liberators inside the Gold Dome.

Located on the bottom floor, the memorial consists of photos and profiles of Georgia Holocaust survivors and veterans alongside a short description of the Holocaust and the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust.

Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick said it is important to have a memorial at the Capitol because of the number of school groups that come through the building.

“What I’d like to achieve is to educate people to the point where they can understand it so that it can never happen again,” she said about the goals of the memorial and commission.

Israel Consul General Anat Sultan-Dadon attended the unveiling and praised Georgia for its investment in Holocaust remembrance. She said, “This is a very visible step that is very important as we are further and further away from the time of the Holocaust and there are fewer and fewer witnesses and survivors.”
