For some, it's the cost of tickets. For others, it's the thought of being sandwiched between strangers in 90 degree weather for three or more hours.
If you are one of those people reconsidering attending a Georgia Bulldogs game in Sanford Stadium, but still want to enjoy the event, here are a few spots around Athens where you can spectate.
1. Mellow Mushroom (Downtown)
High-definition televisions surrounding the restaurant combined with high-end pizza, calzones, hoagies and salads delivered at a moderate price make Mellow Mushroom an upgraded version of a typical sports bar. The franchise has its roots and current headquarters in Atlanta, with one of the original founders being a University of Georgia student, and regularly caters to a Bulldog-loving audience. The homegrown feel and funky atmosphere will liven your spirits while watching the game.
Address: 320 E Clayton St #201, Athens, GA 30601
2. Rooftop of Georgia Theatre (Downtown)
The Georgia Theatre showcases some of Athens' best up-and-coming musicians as well as nationally admired legends almost every night of the week. But climbing to the top of the venue on a Saturday during the fall will let you experience an entirely different perspective. Not only can you watch the game while dining on Branded Butcher meats and drinks, you can also take in the scenery and landscape of the city.
Address: 215 N Lumpkin St, Athens, GA 30601
3. Tate Theatre (On Campus)If you prefer a more family-friendly atmosphere (not to mention air conditioning), the theater inside the Tate Student Center is the place to be. Located directly across from the stadium, the Center features a large projection screen with movie theater style seating. Restrooms are available throughout the building and are much easier to access than those at the stadium.
Address: 45 Baxter St, Athens, GA 30602
4. The Royal Peasant (Five Points)
While usually known as a hangout for the kind of football played in Europe, The Royal Peasant was named one of the best sports bars in the country by CNN. With more than 50 English beers on tap, the restaurant makes for a great place to kick back and enjoy the classic American sporting event as well.
Address: 1675 S Lumpkin St, Athens, GA 30606
5. Fuzzy's Taco Shop (Downtown)
Fuzzy's is the ideal spot if you have a large party eager to watch the game. Long tables with benches underneath allow ample room for you to bang on tables or throw your hands up regardless of the reason. Plus, Bar South, also decked out with televisions, is across the street. The proximity of these bars makes for an easy transition into nighttime festivities after the game ends. Another alternative serving Mexican-style food is The Taco Stand, located on Broad Street across from the Arch.
Address: 265 N Lumpkin St, Athens, GA 30601
6. Blind Pig Tavern
A classic restaurant known for its Sacrificial Goat Roast get-together, Blind Pig Tavern will be moving from Baldwin Street to East Washington Street. Owner Rob White projects the restaurant will be ready for business by the weekend of the Georgia vs. Florida game on Oct. 31.
