3 fun things to do this weekend in Atlanta

ROSWELL

Date Night on the River

Need a night out, but tired of the same old dinner and a movie routine? The Chattahoochee Nature Center has an alternative. On July 31, the grounds will open early so visitors can unpack a picnic and enjoy dinner against the natural backdrop of the river. But, don’t drink that whole bottle of wine before getting into a canoe and letting guides lead you on a 2½ hour sunset paddling tour. The event is open only to adults 18 years or older, and preregistration is required.

5 p.m. July 31. $40. Chattahoochee Nature Center, 9135 Willeo Road, Roswell. 770-992-2055, chattnaturecenter.org.

FAYETTEVILLE

Fayette Youth Film Festival

Aspiring filmmakers ages 19 and younger have created a number of short films of five minutes or less that will be showcased at the Fayette Youth Film Festival at Starr’s Mill High School. The theme, “I Am,” puts a focus on films that inspire a positive message about today’s young people. In addition to the films, the evening will feature industry professionals offering insights. Awards will be given to the best films. The evening’s proceeds will go to support the I Am Foundation, an organization dedicated to breaking stereotypes of young people.

7 p.m. July 31. $12-$20. Starr's Mill High School, 193 Panther Path, Fayetteville. 770-486-2710, www.fayettefilmfest.com.

ATLANTA

‘LatticeWork’ exhibition

The Brown Gallery at Mercer University’s Atlanta campus will showcase photographs by Alpharetta resident Sam Elkind in an exhibition titled “LatticeWork.” Elkind’s art features black and white landscape photography from the American West. He uses film and paper to slow down the entire process and encourage viewers to do the same. His hope is that the artwork will inspire viewers to gain a sense of calm by quietly reflecting on the small segments of the world he has photographed.

10 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 1. Free. Brown Gallery at Mercer University's Swilley Library, 3001 Mercer University Drive, Atlanta. 678-547-6284, libraries.mercer.edu/about-us/about-swilley/brown-art-gallery.
