Cirque du Soleil's 'Ovo' comes to Atlanta

Cirque du Soleil returns to Atlantic Station with the live production of "Ovo," premiering on Thursday, Nov. 4th. The insect-themed show is led by Master Flipo.

It takes dozens of scrambling workers for "The Big Push" to raise the Grand Chapiteau (Big Top) of the Cirque du Soleil Village in Atlanta on Thursday, Oct. 28.

The Big Top stands 66 feet high, is 167 feet in diameter and can accommodate more than 2,600 people.

Ovo (Portuguese for egg) is set in the kingdom of vibrantly colored insects and transpires during a single day under a magnifying glass.

Like the insects they portray, the Cirque acrobats seem to defy gravity.

Deborah Colker, a Rio de Janeiro choreographer, become the first woman to create a Cirque show in the company's 25-year history.

Each family of insects has its own personality in "Ovo." The ants symbolize children.

A contortionist is dressed as a white spider; later she balances on a loosely slung, web-like tightrope.

An acrobat dressed as a fly. Colker says, "Insects really can subvert totally the space. They play with gravity, for example. And this is something as a choreographer that always interests me."

An acrobat dressed as a cricket. Colker says, "Acrobats really can fly, climb walls, they can jump, they can walk down the floor. And with this, I really began the idea of 'Ovo.' "
