The many breweries, brewpubs of Georgia

Georgia is witnessing a boom in microbreweries in Atlanta and beyond.

The Westside Atlanta brewery opened in January 2013. Partners Jonathan Baker, Jeff Heck and Joel Iverson met in a weekly Monday night Bible study and decided to open a craft brewery together while concocting home brew recipes in Heck’s garage.

Red Brick Brewing Company will host "Party With the Past" this Friday, Aug. 21.

Bobby Thomas and fellow ex-plumber Roger Davis founded the microbrewery in 2011. The brewery now occupies an 11,000 square-foot warehouse and gives tours regularly.

This brewpub serves up several of its own beers, along with a full menu of food.

Bob and Kristine Sandage renovated a historic house near Little Five Points and turned it into a brewpub, which, with its food and beer choices, is a favorite with locals.

Atlanta's largest craft brewery, Sweetwater is known for its lively tastings and tours, as well as its extensive list of brews.

Breweries with just as much emphasis on food as beer.

Founded by Paste magazine co-founder Nick Purdy (pictured) and consulting brewmaster Eric Johnson, Wild Heaven brews traditional European beer with an American twist. The brewery is expanding into Avondale Estates in 2013.

Brian Purcell started as a home brewer and is now cranking up a $1.9 million beer brewery in East Decatur.

Named for the shelter owner/brewer Tom Stahl used in his home brew days, the small Decatur microbrewery released it first beer in December 2012. Stahl, a former University of Georgia biochemist, does most everything himself, making the kinds of session beers and IPAs he likes to drink.

This small brew pub opened in late 2012 in Vickery Village of Cumming in partnership with Rick Tanner’s Grille & Bar.

Partners Michael Lundmark and Josh Rachel (pictured) funded the final push for their new brewery with a $30,000 Kickstarter project.

A venture from 5 Seasons brewmaster Crawford Moran and business partner Russ Yates in the former Everybody’s Pizza space in Emory Village as a pizza-plus-beer space.

Opened in 2012 by brothers Will and Lamar Strawn and fellow home brewer Doug Evans as what they call “The Working Man’s Brewery.”

Founded in 2002 by John Cochran and Spike Bukowski, the brewery -- known for its Rye Pale Ale -- now averages 30,000 visitors a year.

Wrecking Bar Brewpub owner Bob Sandage (with Kristine) tells the AJC, he hopes to be selling four to six craft beers in stores in a year and a half.

Red Brick, the oldest operating craft brewery in the state of Georgia, celebrates its 20th anniversary on July 27, 2013. In 2007, the brewery moved to its current Atlanta location on Defoor Hills Road, where it gives regular tasting tours.
