WITH THE passing of Bea Arthur, Hollywood loses one of its greats: An actress who was unafraid to play loud-mouthed, opinionated, acerbic -- and funny -- characters. The 86-year-old Arthur died of cancer on Saturday.

HERE ARTHUR is pictured with her former husband, Gene Saks, in 1977. They had two sons.

ARTHUR IS famous for playing the titular Maude Findlay, the outspoken "women's libber" of TV infamy, 1972-1978. (This photo was taken in 1975.) The show was a spinoff of "All in the Family."

MORE RECENTLY, Arthur (bottom center) played Dorothy Zbornak, an acid-tongued Miami senior on "Golden Girls" (1985-1992).

ARTHUR'S CHARACTER (second right) lived with two friends and her elderly mother, and their close friendship was a highlight of the show.

RUE MCLANAHAN (top) reprised her on-air friendship with Arthur in "Golden Girls"; she also starred as Maude Findlay's dotty neighbor Vivian.

ARTHUR WON an Emmy for her portrayal of Zbornak in 1988.

THE ACTRESS testified on behalf of a California Senate measure banning the production and sale of foie gras in Sacramento.

IN 2003, the Golden Girls, minus Estelle Getty, reunited for Lifetime TV. (Getty was already suffering from dementia at that point.)
