When it premiered in 1978, "Diff'rent Strokes" was an unusually diverse family sitcom. Two African-American brothers from Harlem moved in with a wealthy white widower and his teenage daughter after their mother, who had previously worked for the widower, died. The show propelled its young stars to fame, especially Gary Coleman, but no one could foretell the rough roads each of the former child actors would face during adulthood.
