Some very ugly pooches arrived at the Sonoma-Marin Fair Friday afternoon on June 21st to win the coveted prize of the ‘World’s Ugliest Dog’.

Some very ugly pooches arrived at the Sonoma-Marin Fair Friday afternoon on June 21st to win the coveted prize of the ‘World’s Ugliest Dog’.

This year, the contest is celebrating its 25th anniversary at the fairgrounds. There are about 33 contestants with such names like Toots, Cyndi Loo, Camp, Monkey Man, etc. Plus, more than 50% of the contestants have never competed before.

Last year's winner was a Chinese crested named Mugly, who blew the judges away with bedraggled whiskers, beady eyes and dark, crinkled skin. The 8-year-old rescue dog hails from Britain, where he had previously been named England's ugliest dog.

Chinese cresteds have taken home the majority of the Ugliest Dog titles in the past decade mainly because the breed's trait of hairlessness.

This year marks the increase from $1,000 to $1,500 in the cash prize for winning the title of ‘World’s Ugliest Dog’. The title comes with a trophy and an instant launch into worldwide acclaim.
