This week, singer Phil Collins announced his retirement, saying he wanted to spend time with his young sons. It marks the end of an impressive career, from its start with the band Genesis to solo albums and movie soundtracks.

Collins represented as a drummer for Genesis during the band's '70s heyday. He became the band's lead singer after a pre-"In Your Eyes" Peter Gabriel (left of Collins) left to pursue a solo career.

Collins presented two mini-sized tour jackets to Princess Diana during a charity concert at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1985. The jackets were specially made for the Princess' children, Prince William and Prince Harry.

Eric Clapton and Collins flew out of Heathrow Airport while making an album together in 1984.

Collins got in on Super Bowl Shuffle mania when he took his son Simon to get an autograph from Chicago Bear Walter Payton in 1986.

Collins posed with Ronald "Buster" Edwards in 1987a year before he played him in a movie based on his life. Collins has acted in more than 15 movies and has done the soundtrack for more than 90.

Collins was joined by daughters Lily, left, and Joli when he received the 2,138 star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999 in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles. Lily later became an actress, most recently starring in "The Blind Side."

In 2000, Collins added an Oscar -- for the song "You'll Be In My Heart" from "Tarzan" -- to his long string of awards.

Collins received an honor medal in 1997 for his work with the homeless.

Collins sang with a reunited Genesis in 2007 in Switzerland.

Collins attended the premiere of "Brother Bear" -- for which he wrote the soundtrack -- with his then-wife Orianne and his son Niclas in 2004. He divorced Orianne, his third wife, in 2007.

Collins spoke when Genesis Genesis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
