In her early youth, Badu decided to change the spelling of her name from Erica to Erykah, as she firmly believed her original name to be her 'slave' name. She has a son named Seven with ex-boyfriend Andre 3000 of Outkast. On July 5, 2004, Badu gave birth to a daughter, Puma, and the father is reportedly rapper The D.O.C.

Erykah Badu was orn Erica Abi Wright on Feb. 21, 1971, in Dallas.

As a child she attended a Dallas school of the arts. She worked as a teacher and part-time singer early in her career.

It was a sold-out crowd at the Fox Theatre Friday night.

The Grammy Award-winning Roots formed in Philadelphia in 1987.

Surprise guest Jill Scott was discovered by 'Questlove' Thompson of The Roots, who invited her to join the band in the studio. The collaboration resulted in the co-composition 'You Got Me, ' a Top 40 pop hit in 1999.

The show brought the crowd to their feet.
