Eagles kick off summer tour at new Alpharetta amphitheatre

The Eagles became the first rock band to perform at the new Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park in Alpharetta, Ga. The band is doing four shows at the amphitheatre, which opened Saturday, as it kicks off its summer tour.

The Eagles initiated the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park as a rock venue on Wednesday night. The new amphitheatre in Alpharetta had its grand opening last Saturday with a performance by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which owns and operates the facility.

The legendary musicians will perform three more shows at the amphitheatre Friday, Saturday and next Tuesday. The Eagles, left to right: Timothy B. Don Henley on "I Don't Want to Hear." After the band's breakup in 1980, Henley became perhaps the most visible ex-Eagle with a successful solo career. He rejoined the band for a 1994 reunion and intermittent performances thereafter.

Guitarist Joe Walsh had a highly successful solo career in the 1970s. He joined the Eagles in 1976, replacing Bernie Leadon. He returned to a solo career in the '80s, with mixed results, and was a driving force behind the Eagles reunion in 1994.

Guitarist Glen Frey on stage at the Encore Park amphitheatre. Frey was involved in the now infamous faceoff with former Eagle Don Felder on stage in California in July 1980. Each spent the show threatening to beat up the other at the end. The Eagles broke up a few weeks later. Felder was with the band when it reunited in 1994 for intermittent performances, but was booted in 2001 and filed a lawsuit finally settled in 2007.

Joe Walsh jams with guitarist Steuart Smith, who is touring with the Eagles this summer. Smith was hired by the Eagles after Don Felder's departure. He co-wrote several songs on the Eagles' 2007 album "Long Road Out of Eden" and has performed with Don Henley when he took his solo act on the road.

Fans on the lawn cheer the opening number of the Eagles. They are the first major rock band to play at the park. All four shows are sold out.

The Eagles rocked the amphitheatre that the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will call home for much of the summer. Other rock acts coming to the amphitheatre include the Steve Miller Band and Joe Cocker on May 26, Stevie Nicks on June 10 and Steely Dan on June 11.
