The iconic rock act is on the list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees for the 2012 class released Tuesday.

Guns 'N' Roses tops the 2012 inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The 27th induction ceremony will take place April 14 in Cleveland. Guns 'N' Roses formed in Hollywood in 1985. The lineup of singer Axl Rose (above), guitarists Slash and Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler sold more than 100 million records. "Welcome to the Jungle," "Sweet Child o' Mine" and "November Rain" won the band acclaim in the 1990s. The other inductees include:

INDUCTEE: The hip-hop American trio of Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz, Adam "MCA" Yauch, and Michael "Mike D" Diamond has sold more then 40 million albums worldwide. The Beastie Boys have grown from punk stars to political activists and style icons. Their single "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" was a teenage party anthem, while their other hits "Brass Monkey" and "Paul Revere" were radio staples.

INDUCTEE: The Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the most flamboyant, commercially successful and musically influential bands of rock's last quarter century. Their hits include "Under the Bridge" and "Give It Away."

INDUCTEE: Donovan Leitch ignited the psychedelic revolution virtually single-handedly with the iconic single "Sunshine Superman." His numerous Top 40 hits include "Catch The Wind," "Colours," and "Goo Goo Barabajagal (Love Is Hot)," which was backed by the Jeff Beck Group.

INDUCTEE: Laura Nyro, a singer-songwriter, influenced a generation of women artists with songs like "Eli's Coming'' and "Stoned Soul Picnic'' and her intimate blend of pop, folk and jazz. She died in 1997.

INDUCTEE: Before his breakout solo career, British rock star Rod Stewart was part of the influential act Small Faces and Faces. The group's hits include "Lazy Sunday," "All or Nothing," and "Tin Soldier."

INDUCTEE: Freddy King, nicknamed "the Texas Cannonball," was an influential African-American blues guitarist and singer. He is best known for singles "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" and "Hide Away."

The nominees not making it this year are: Joan Jett, a founding member of the all-female group The Runaways, went on to become a chart-topping success after forming the Blackhearts in 1982. Her rock anthem "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" remains a standard 30 years after its release.

NOMINEE: Sisters Nancy Wilson and Ann Wilson were among the first women to front an aggressive rock band. Heart cut some of the 1970s and '80s most memorable songs, from "Barracuda" to "Magic Man."

NOMINEE: Donna Summer, an American singer/songwriter, gained prominence during the disco era of the 1970s. Among her chart-topping hits are "She Works Hard For The Money," "MacArthur Park," "Hot Stuff," and "This Time I Know It's For Real."

NOMINEE: Eric B & Rakim are considered among hip-hop's pioneers. In the mid-1980s to the early 90s, the duo was almost universally regarded as the premier MC/DJ combo. "Juice (Know the Ledge)" remains their most popular song.

NOMINEE: Through all its incarnations, one constant has remained for The Cure, frontman Robert Smith. Striking at the height of British New Wave scene, The Cure has influenced a new generation of emo and goth bands. The group's standards include 1987's "Just Like Heaven" and 1992's "Friday I'm in Love."

NOMINEE: Not to be confused with English folk group with the same name, The Spinners came to define the Philadelphia Sound despite their Motor City origins. Their soulful R&B hits include "I'll Be Around," "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," "One Of A Kind (Love Affair)" and "Mighty Love."

NOMINEE: War, an American funk band from California, known for the hit songs "Low Rider", "Spill the Wine", "The Cisco Kid" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?"

NOMINEE: Chaka Khan burst on the seen with the Chicago-based Rufus in the 1970s. She moved easily between R&B, rock and disco before going onto an enviable solo career.
