Kate Hudson has built her cache playing bubbly romantic roles in recent years. "Fool's Gold." "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days." "My Best Friend's Wedding."

She's at it again with the upcoming comedy "Bride Wars," (out today) where she faces off against Anne Hathaway. The pair play two best friends who accidentally end up with the same wedding date. Girl fight!

"We try to sabotage each other's wedding day," Hudson said in an interview last month to promote the film, which was not screened by the AJC. "But inevitably, they come to realize it would mean nothing if we weren't at each other's weddings."

Ah, yes. That is pretty much the plotline, isn't it? But with so many serious films floating around at this time of year, a little froth can't hurt.

Q: What drew you to this film?

A: It's the first movie I've ever produced, which is really an awesome learning experience. For this film to work, you have to like the girls. It's hard to do that without making the girls catty. You want to root for them and not take sides. It's tricky. I think we made it funny and out there and we make fun of ourselves.

Q: So this isn't like "War of the Roses," which is pretty dark.

A: We originally had a screenplay that was really dark, a black comedy, super R rated. But that just didn't work. It's a movie about relationships and we thought it should be for all ages, for girls. When we got to casting, our first choice was Anne [opposite Hudson.] We got lucky.

Q: How was she to work with?

A: Anne and I had a real easy time connecting. We're such different people both in the movie and in real life. Some of my best girlfriends are total opposites of me. I learned a lot from her. She's really fearless.

Q: It looks like quite a bit of catfighting. Did you need stunt doubles?

A: Yes, there is a lot of physical humor. But we only had to use one stunt double. Physical humor doesn't work if you're not doing it. That's be cheating.

Q: Have you seen "Bridezillas" [the show on the WE network]?

A: I saw an episode a couple years back. It was pretty funny. One girl was totally insane. She really lost it!

Q: Were you a bride from hell when you got married [to former Atlanta musician Chris Robinson, whom she is now divorced]?

A: A friend of mine was listening to me do an interviewing saying no. She reminded me that I was complaining about this and that. It was a stressful time. You always have those moments. As a bride, you always feel like you're doing it on your own.

Q: Any favorite wedding movies?

A: I remember seeing "Father of the Bride." I went with my dad [technically her stepdad Kurt Russell]. We used to have little date nights. We went to see that and then had sushi. The movie really got to the both of us.

Q: How come you've focused more on doing romantic comedies instead of more serious films that might get some Oscar buzz?

A: One, because I really do enjoy making comedies. Two, I try not to work too much because I'm a mother and three, because there's a reason you do films at certain times of your life. It should feel right. I'm 29. I'm entering my 30s soon. It will probably be a really fun time to do more interesting roles.
