Using the term gourmet to describe anything, let alone a Mexican restaurant, is a tricky business. And truth be told, there is nothing that lives up to that billing at the Bridge Mexican Gourmet. But this very friendly, family-run place in Roswell has lots of local admirers, and it's easy to see why. Big portions of above average Tex-Mex grub at bargain prices and a tidy mom-and-pop atmosphere make it a go-to choice for a quick lunch or casual dinner.

Road to the Bridge

The Bridge is in a small suburban strip center on Alpharetta Street near the intersection of Holcomb Bridge Road. Inside, the space is simple but pleasant with tiled floors, terra-cotta-colored walls and a quirky assortment of sombreros and Aztec-influenced art. Comfy booths and tables are appointed with cloth tablecloths and napkins and stainless flatware. A cozy bar in back, with a flat-screen TV perched above, is an inviting spot for a drink and a snack or a glance at the game.

Mexican menu

A gratis basket of tortilla chips with a bottle of spicy red salsa is a good beginning. After that, the menu choices include starters, soups and salads, and the kind of combos you'd find at a multitude of microwave Mexican joints. But most of the ingredients here are a cut above, especially the sauces. A pair of chicken enchiladas are tender strips of white meat folded in soft corn tortillas, topped with tangy green or hearty mole salsa and crumbly Mexican cheese. Served on a platter, with decent rice and refried beans, and a small salad topped with a juicy-ripe tomato, the dish is a great deal for $7.95.

Specials and steak

There's a nightly special Mondays to Saturdays, ranging from tilapia with grilled shrimp and a spicy wine sauce; and grilled chicken breast, with botted onions, tomatoes, jalapeños, cilantro and red sauce; to seafood casserole, with shrimp and scallops in a mild wine and mushroom sauce. But steak is a big part of the menu every night of the week — whether it's a basic fajita platter or the embellished steak poblano, stuffed with ham and cheese, and topped with sautéed onions, poblano peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes.

The full bar features margaritas and an array of house cocktails, as well as domestic and Mexican lagers, and a short wine list.
